Vintage Lace Sample Book

Hello dear friends,

Welcome back! Alas, a month has slipped by unblogged!  But I have some exciting posts coming up soon here.

Today I'm showing you my vintage lace sampler.  I picked it up at a  vintage market in Sydney a few years ago. It has come from a millinery shop in Tasmania - that's all the vendor knew about it. I keep it in a gap between some sewing machine drawers which I've painted in a shabby chic style. It's held in place by a worn old book without its cover.

I rarely get the opportunity to go to Rozelle Collectors' Market, but I've enjoyed it each time, and found some great vintage treasures. The trees are huge and very old, and their shade is very welcome in Summer.

The market is held in the grounds of Rozelle Public School, built in 1877 - a magnificent-looking building.

You can find vintage clothes, doilies, lace, china, bric-a-brac, antiques, old postcards, ephemera and interesting food. I love this old chest of drawers below. Quite expensive, though!

I struck it lucky when I noticed this old lace sample book...

One of the pages had separated, and it had no cover. Here are some of the pages...

I think it's all machine-made lace, but I'd be interested if anyone can tell me more about it. I looked up Tasmanian lace and found nothing relevant.

It's so tempting to actually use the pieces of lace in artworks, but it seems a pity to ruin such an interesting collectible item. What do you think I should do?

I've started to make a cover for it. Here's the idea, still in progress. I'll show you the completed cover next post. It may look quite different by then!

  1. Hello Jesse,
What a stunning lace sampler book you found at the Rozelle Market. It looks simply amazing! I wonder how old it might be? Have you come across any of the lace that are sampled in the book?
That looks like a really fantastic vintage market too. I've never been there - not travelling to Sydney at all for many years!.
It looks lovely nestled in between the sewing machine drawers and the cover is coming along nicely. I'm sure it will look gorgeous when finished and wrapped around the old sampler book!
Happy Winter my friend. Our trees are now bare but it is still not that cold yet!
    Love and hugs,
    Suzy

    1. Hi Suzy, I haven't found any of these laces elsewhere apart from in the book. They are very fine.

You would LOVE the Rozelle Market. But it's hard to get to. Driving is a nightmare, parking extremely rare, trains don't go there; you have to catch a bus from the Central train station.

I've just come back from a trip to Oberon to see my mum - it was very cold there, so I am finding our Winter mild so far - and it's so good to get some decent rain at last! Hope you are enjoying our Winter too - I love the cosy indoors days.
      Love and hugs,

    1. Hello Karen, Thanks for confirming that the book is too precious to destroy even for the sake of art! I thought you had heaps of great vintage markets and fairs all over the USA? I'm often jealous of US market photos I see online.
      Sending you love and hugs,
