Vintage Wallpaper

This week I have been immersed in vintage wallpaper. The Moruya Museum is having an exhibition based around a most gorgeous book by Peter Freeman, called 'The Wallpapered Manse'. The book was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's History Awards, and it's a gem. Through the layers of wallpaper and peeling paint, the author traces the history of this 1860's Georgian building, the Presbyterian manse next door to the church. 



I've been photographing the old newspapers used behind the wallpapers, and fragments of the various layers of wallpapers since 1865 that have been lovingly salvaged to put together a poster for the exhibition, as well as fragments of painted timbers and lino scraps.

These are just some of the poster ideas. The dates and exhibition title are still to be decided. I found a couple of ads in 1950-60 newspapers for shops that still exist in Moruya...

I've also been working on a poster for our next concert... that's me 3rd from left, and my hammered dulcimer is on the left. It was tricky setting the timer and running to be in the photo!

That's my creative output for this week, as well as practicing for the above concet and  for the 50th National Folk Festival in Canberra, Australia.

Simply Neutrals #10 Hats and Fairies

This week I'm joining Wen's Simply Neutrals party after a couple of weeks off on 'busy-ness'.

I've chosen a hat theme. Part of my time has been spent at our local museum photographing their old hats for a hat exhibition. I prepared a few of the best photos for a poster... Sorry if some are not quite neutrals, but I thought the muted old shades would fit the theme.

There were a few volunteers helping to set them up -none of us are professionals, so we tried out various ideas and had some fun. It's like playing 'house' as kids! Here are the final posters:

Here's a photo I took of my daughter Roisin (which is Irish for 'little rose') years ago wearing my favourite of her hats. Sadly, she threw it out of the pram and I didn't notice.

Next, a cabinet card draped in lace...

Lastly, a little Christmas fairy I made from a tutorial from Dawn Edmonson of The Feathered Nest.

Simply Neutrals Tuesday # 5 Vintage linens, a wall hanging and a vintage recipe

Greetings everyone! My, the weeks fly by when they are measured by a Simply Neutrals Party! Tanks Wen for hosting it again.

This week I had a play with adding some frames to some of my photos. Here are some vintage linens in grey and cream and white, with a lovely jug (not vintage). I use it as a vase.

I especially love the cream jewellery box with the girl on the lid...

I had my first swim of the season a few days ago when it was hot, but now it's jumper weather again! Here is our local school bus stop beach with rainbows, in neutral cloudy weather. What a delight it is to wait for the bus here!

I passed these sailing boats moored so artistically every now and then for a few weeks, but there was nowhere to stop the car for a photo. The road runs alongside the river. One day the boats were in perfect formation, so I stopped further on and walked back to take this photo... on the Moruya River looking towards the Deua National Park.

I noticed these old boots stuffed with bottle brushes (a native Australian plant) on a bushwalk - I wonder what happened to the boots' owner... did he go barefoot? (Not many women with feet this size!) Slip out of the old boots into a new life, faking suicide? I had to take a picture...

Here's a photo I took at our Moruya Museum of a handwritten cookbook from 1895. I love it! The old wooden spoon is so worn, and the white stock was just perfect for the era. You can see recipes for pikelets, melting moments and Dundee Cake.

This rose book tells the story of Pierre-Joseph Redoute. Sadly, there are no pictures apart from the magnificent cover. It's not quite neutral, but the old pale pink mixes well with neutral colours...

I have started some pages for a new lace book. Here's the first one. I need to buy a new printer as mine has died, and I have almost run out of pictures to use!

Simply Neutrals Party #2 Vintage Wedding

Lillian Pearce married William Hunt in Newtown, Sydney in 1913. She is wearing a cape over the dress, so it looks different here. You can see it peeping through at the bottom.
